Really nice pub. Food was great too, big portions and felt home cooked. Would go back here

Great pub. Lively, great staff, great collection of brilliant local and regulars. Sits just off Duke St and has to be on the route for any pub crawl. Two nice long rows of outside tables at the front of the pub to watch the world (well, Chelmsford) go by. Hotel above the bar for those looking to stay intown longer. Round the corner from bus station and takeaways but opposite 96 Lanterns for swift Chinese after a good session in The Ship. An absolute must.

Handy pub from the station, a reasonable selection of beers (shame they didn't seem to have any dark ones on when I visited). Comfy seating. Friendly staff and a nice atmosphere too. Don't use often but always come back.

I stayed at the Ship as was attending a wedding in Chelmsford and driving back to Devon the same day seemed a bit extreme.

It can be quite anxiety inducing travelling by yourself however any anxiety that might have been felt was squashed instantly by the warm welcome received.

On arrival everything was explained clearly and concisely. All of the staff were so lovely and the room was clean and well presented.

The only MINOR gripe i would have is there was a lot of road noise however being this close to London and on a fairly busy street you would be silly to expect otherwise!

All in all a great experience and would definitely recommend!

Great lovely pub, good atmosphere and great ales. I love my ales and it’s such a delight to make regular trips to a place and find the same clean crisp quality ale every time. You know they look after them very well by the appearance and taste. Not yet tried the food but it’s next on the list. :)

Used to frequent the Ship regularly when I was working at Britvic House, now sadly gone. Had a reunion last Saturday with some of the people I used to work with many years ago. Still like it was back in my day and glad its not changed too much. Didn't eat here this time but food was always good when I last did. Nice that it's still there and still going strong 😚

This pub sits outside the centre of the city, along Broomfield Rd but always gets a good trade (well always seems to have people in there when I go or past it!)

Inside its a bit old school, random tables dotted about with chairs / stools and a bit dark (sometimes it feels much later than it is - although that could also be the drinks being consumed that does that!) Have been a few times over the years and occasionally it's a bit of squeeze in some areas of the pub if there is more than 5 or 6 of you due to the way its laid out. Less of an issue with your just drinking...!

Food has always been good although on occasions it takes a while for the food to come out, and they tend to bring the food as its done so on occasions when in a group some people are just starting as others are just finishing!

Drinks selection is good, they always seem to have something that is a little less mainstream on the pump which is nice to see. There is a few pay and display car parks near by, including a small one behind the pub.

Excellent range of beers and ales. Roomy comfortable seating areas. Good service and a really handy and cheap parking area right behind the pub.
