So why am I giving them 1 star? Because of their association with Ashbourne Management. I paid a month in cash & had a couple of sessions helped by a member of their staff to learn to use their equipment... The same as if I were to go to any other gym which offers free induction & so they can check you're using the right form or not as they are legally obliged to make sure I know how to safely use the equipment, for myself & for the other members, important in respect of squats with weights & deadlifts! & as part of this and for a month I paid my money in cash. If you are intending to pay monthly and are happy to pay by cash or card, I would recommend you use this facility rather than 1 of their 'long term memberships'. You can still budget easily & the main thing best part is that you are not tied in to any contract! That was what I was looking to do originally. Pay for each session, then it was mentioned to me it would be a lot cheaper to pay per month which it is... But then they said if you invest longer stick with us longer then we will be able to look after you more... Who wouldn't want that from a gym? some attention to detail by members of staff in a gym checking our form & giving us hints & tips & helping us to progress .. after all, if we become good & I was hoping to be as a newcomer to weights, then it would benefit me & look good for the gym (& rightly so)... But that's where the problem begins... Because of this I thought ok I will give this gym a proper go & sign up for 6 months still paying monthly... Except it wasn't highlighted to me that once I did that I would effectively go from being a member of Legends to being a member having a membership under the Ashbourne Management company. That is not what I signed up for .I didn't sign up for Ashbourne to decide when & how I could cancel my membership, I didn't sign up for Legends gym, not to be able themselves to end my membership at my request due to a slight change in my circumstances.. if they would have done that I would have been back in when my circumstances changed again. All I was under the impression Ashbourne would do was to collect my direct debits for Legends but under the direct debit guarantee I am allowed to decide to not do direct debit if I find that it is no longer appropriate to pay this way.
I signed a contract not fully having it explained to me what it all meant. You try standing on tiptoe to put in your details on a form where you've just for crosses to sign & a counter to lean on that is higher than you are!
But my membership with Ashbourne doesn't technically start until the 24th/25th February. It says so on the form, irrespective of what date I signed any contract. & yet I have already been chased for payment because yes I have cancelled my direct debit so I can retain control over when I pay & how. The reason being, my circumstances have changed slightly, only 11 days in (to what though? As I am still within my paid month in cash at the gym and my Ashbourne membership hasn't started yet, it says on the form.. membership to start on..), but my membership has changed, not enough to warrant a change of address etc but because my working environment is changing for a while.
Legends Gym, who I thought I was a member of their gym not a member of Ashbourne, I am not choosing to train with Ashbourne/lift weights with Ashbourne, said I would need to cancel with Ashbourne not them... Not fair!... But then Ashbourne seem to think my word is good/honest for signing contracts AND accepting my money to be paid to the gym .but. not good enough without 'proof' to cancel a membership that I didn't want with Ashbourne in the first place because I didn't choose them as my gym!
