TThe church was the work of the prolific Victorian architect William Butterfield famous for the controversial Keble College, Oxford and many other works. Following its dedication on All Saints' Day 1849, further work was carried out and extensions completed in 1890. The earliest stained glass windows were by C.E.Kempe. A later window is from the William Morris Company and the local Whitefriars Glass Company made a new window, a modern St George slaying the dragon, in 1962.he earliest stained glass windows were by C.E.Kempe. If you are very luckily there may be a rare Common Spotted Orchid in the churchyard, keep an eye out and feet off!
Evocatively set back from the road, approached through a lych-gate and a veteran lime treed avenue amidst time-worn gravestones, tablets and memorials.
Crosse & Blackwell are buried here.*
Unusually the churchyard leads directly onto a delightful woodland conservation area that is certainly worth exploring if you’re adrift hereabouts. A Forest School is situated in the woodland.
An active community here.
* in 1830 they bought and renamed an existing successful food manufacturing company.
The church benefactored by amongst others Cross & Blackwell is set purposely away from the main road to create a country church feel from the mid 1800s.
The church is a welcoming community.
The has interesting stainglass windows including one using whitefriars technique. There are several war memorials.
The architect who build the church also at the end of his career returned to complete the extension at the end of his career.
Previous review: sadly closed when I visited despite Google saying open 9am to 5pm.
The church is from mid 1800s. Its is a beautiful church set in its own grounds and cemetery.
Leefe Robinson vc is buried locally.
Despite being on a busy road. It is a secluded and peaceful oasis worth a visit.
