We've been going to the Shappi in Ashford for many years now, and every time we go, we find the food and customer service to be first class. The meals are excellent every time!
As long term satisfied customers of the Shappi in Ashford, we're happy to recommend it as the restaurant to go to if you want a tasty, quality Indian meal.
We were a little concerned when we heard that the place was under new ownership but we were pleased to see familiar faces on our recent visits.
It was a little strange not to see the regular Boss Man but the new owner seems very helpful and accommodating.
Only thing missing was the offer of a Coffee or Drink on the house at the end of the evening but I am sure that this is something that we can work on 😊
Keep up the good work folks, See you soon.
Not suitable for Indians or those who like to try Indian curries.
We ordered food from here, as it was my B'day. And what a dissapointment it was.
Every dish we ordered, Chicken Bhuna, Chicken Rogan Josh and Prawn Puree were sweet in taste!! It felt like we were having some sweet dish/ dessert. Indian curries don't taste sweet, they taste spicy.
Also the base sauce of each of these dish was exactly the same, if you closed your eyes and would eat, you wouldn't know the difference as they tasted exactly the same and very sweet!! None of these dish were anywhere close to the original dish, not even the colour of it. Infact if you see the pictures I've shared they all look exactly the same except for the oversized tomato pieces and the prawns.
I highly doubt if the cook has ever had authentic Indian food, because if they did they would know what they cooked isn't Indian food.
The tandoori mixed platter was the only decent food, though I would say I've had much better. The lamb pieces were either over cooked or stale meat as it was so chewy, we just threw it in the bin.
Feel sorry to write this as the staff were very cordial when we called to ask for dish information.
But with regards to food, would never order from here again. Definitely not suitable for Indians or those who like to try Indian curries.
Edit after Owner Reply:
My intention were very clear, enjoy a good Indian meal on my B'day. But what we got was no where close to Indian food. My money was wasted and I believe I have the right to share my disappointment.
I'm sorry if this hurt, but my review is honest and purely about the food and not the service.
As I saw no point in phoning on the night as by now it was nearly 21.00! the sauces were poured away and people just ate chicken with the remainder of watery liquid ! I phoned the next day to find out what had happened that was so out of character for Shappi .To be fair the person did ask why I didn't phone the previous night to which I added that it was late and to be honest when you get food of that standard who would want to try again? I was informed that water is added to the mango chutney and the reason for the disastrous Pasanda's was they had a new chef!! Well if the chef can't cook a pasanda then why employee them ? ALL THEY WANTED TO DO WAS BLAME THE CHEF! I pointed out that if someone had checked the quality then the meals would not have been sent out! I was then politely informed the owner would phone me back to discuss the issue and they would do me good deal on my next order ! I explained why would i want a good deal on what was sub standard food Having waited 24 hrs before writing for the owner to phone back and he never did ! I will not be ordering from Shappi again and suggest that maybe this place is now under new ownership as this has and would never have happened before.... Could be wrong!
As I can't find a way to put a reply on my review! it is only right that I add to the original!
Since posting the owner has phoned me to explain what problems the restaurant had on the night! It turns out the chef that was on went sick during service and had to go home ! a step in chef helped but obviously not to the normal standard! He has very kindly offered my family to come in and have a meal at a discount! I have said that I will discuss with my family as its not just myself that felt let down and to a point embarrassed as we had guests that night but also some of my family! And we recommended Shappi.
I still stand by my view that the food (especially as it was not cooked by the normal chef) should have been quality control checked but appreciate the offer of a discounted meal.
As well somtimes I have ordered it online. The food was still delicious and was here at the time stated or even a few mintes before.
To anyone who wants to eat Indian, I highly recommend this place.
