Background information (be warned, its long!):
Over the past 2 years or so my car suffered from a rough idle when starting from cold. It would only last about 30 seconds or so then it was fine for the duration of the journey. My car is a 2010 BMW E92 330D LCI (N57 Engine) that I have since owned for 4~ years and put around 80,000 miles on (always filled with Shell V-Power & used the best oil). My commute consists of a 60 mile round trip in back to back traffic on the motorway, this probably attributed to the symptoms over the years.
At first the rough idling would only occur in -°c conditions. I remember one day it was particularity bad that the car shut off. This is what finally made me start researching the problem. I found out that it was most likely the glow plugs/heating module at fault. I used ISTA+ to check for error codes and sure enough there was an entry about a communication issue with the glow plug controller. I bought said parts but didn't act on it after finding out it could be quite a difficult job if I tried to fit them myself, especially if something went wrong! As I rely on the car massively this just wasn't worth the risk. However a few months later I noticed the rough idle would happen even in warmer temperatures (still only from a cold start though). This ultimately led me to researching 'coked up engines' (built up carbon deposits). The key to clearing this build up (bar a full engine strip down) is walnut blasting the inlets/valves. The process requires specialist skills/equipment to carry it out and I believe having the right adapters depending on the model of engine is equally as important for it to work.
Now, let me state that I searched many garages around the North West and couldn't find a single one that would offer this service, except Blackpool Motor Works! One in particular that stood out was a so called renown BMW specialist garage based in St Helens, strangely when I asked if they could do it I was told it wasn't possible on diesel engines?! Which is obviously a load of rubbish and shows how much of a clue some garages DON'T have about this topic.
To cut a long story short - After having my inlets walnut blasted and the new glow plugs/control module fitted the rough idling has vanished and the car feels smooth, pretty much like it is brand new again.
I would highly recommend having this work carried out and using these guys if your car is suffering from the same symptoms!
Dawne on the front desk was very helpful and kept me up to date with text messages.
Happy to recommend this garage.
A courtesy car was provided for us FOC, then a technician went over the car to rectify the reported issues and then carried out a full electronic diagnostics check resetting the VTG settings. Following this he carried out a road test to ensure the repair was a success all for £52.00 including the VAT.
We’ll definitely be using this company again!!!
