The hill is steep, but THERE ARE DONKEYS. And also craft beer and ice cream. 👍

Clovelly is an historic fishing village on the north Devon coast. It belongs to an estate in a similar way to Portmerion in Wales. People live there and run the village but if you want to visit, there is an admission fee.

It is a bit touristy but worth seeing. It sort of hangs off the side of a cliff. The narrow cobbled street descends almost vertically. So be prepared for that. Top to bottom is about a kilometre I believe. But there are plenty of funny little shops to take a break in.

At the bottom of the hill you will be rewarded with a view of the old stone walled harbour full of little fishing boats.

The Red Lion serves decent pub food. Make sure to have a pint of Clovelly Cobbler from Devon brewer Country Life. Steer clear of the scrumpy. The fish and chips was delicious and made without the skin on the fish. Very few places do it properly like that any more. If you don't want to climb back up the hill you can pay £2.50 for a ride in one of the estate's land rovers.

It is a time capsule of an ancient way of life now preserved wholesale by the estate.

THERE ARE ALSO DONKEYS. Which used to be used for carrying goods up and down the hill. Happily they are now only there for photo ops. And they are probably the smuggest creatures you will ever see.

This reminds me that, obviously, there are no cars in the village. The land rovers take a back road. Everything is dragged up and down the hill on sledges.

Other things:
Take time to see the film at the visitor centre.

The visitor centre has a great range of local craft beer.

The visitor centre has a pressed penny machine.

Admission is about £8 for adults.

The walk is f***ing steep. Wear appropriate shoes. I would say it is not good for people with mobility issues but I am pretty fit and there were little old ladies with canes making it up and down there faster than I.

Not sure it would be great for little kids.

People live in the village. Respect their privacy and don't peer into windows or knock on doors.

Eat ALL THE ICE CREAM. You'll work it off in the climb.

Very pretty little harbour, quaint village with no cars allowed. All owned by one estate, which is cashing in on the tourist industry bug time. Lively walk along the pebbly shore, interesting rock formations and once you get away from the tourist area, unspoilt. Go early: it gets very full after 11am. Recommend eating at the harbour pub, but you must book or you won't get in that day. Steep walk, not suitable for elderly or infirm. Land rover service can take you diwn to the harbour from the car park and take you back for a fee

Had not visited for 50 years so it was great to see what little changes there were. Best is the visitor centre at the top and donkey farm. The landowners are still ferrying visitors back up to the top as well!
