A great show - but watch your handbag

You don't need to spend any money here to enjoy a great few hours, just looking around.

There's loads to see - one of the best free attractions in London!

For starters, there are the window displays outside. Spend some time looking at them all. Works of Art! This can easily take half an hour.

Then go inside. Wow! The light, the colours, the sounds, the perfumes! It's a real shock to all the senses as you go into this Aladdin's Cave or Temple to Consumerism.

Choose where to wander, and where to gape. Perhaps in Fine Jewellery? BVLGARI Serpenti 18ct white-gold and pavé-diamond necklace, only £75,000.00. I love the way that they add the dot and the 00 to show that it's not £75,000.99 p. Saving those 99 pence must be really heart-warming.

Have a look at any department, you'll be thunderstruck. Are there really people who spend that sort of money? Who have that sort of spare cash? Are they avid readers of TripAdvisor?

After - or at the same time - as gaping at the merchandise, gape more discreetly at the other customers. Don't bother looking at those who are clearly TripAdvisor readers out to gape not buy, look at the really wealthy folk. You can tell that they are really wealthy by looking first at their watches. (Nearly forgot to say that you should look at the Watches for sale too. BVLGARI Octo Solotempo 18ct pink-gold and alligator-leather watch. £16,500.00. Father's Day is coming up - just what you could give him!).

So look at the watches, and other jewellery, of some of the other customers. Gulp! A young foreign couple, mid-twenties, glistening and glittering with diamonds. Both of them. An elderly lady, hair neatly covered by a black scarf, but seems hardly strong enough to bear the weight of the rings and bracelets peeping out of her sleeve. It's fabulous country for people watching!

But there are other people watching you there too. Although they would prefer the bag of a Japanese Tourist with £10,000 in Yen, yours will do if you are careless. Selfridges, like the other big stores, does its bit to pritect you by having highly-trained plain-clothes security staff who can recognise repeat offenders on sight, but do take care. The whole of the posh shopping areas are haunted by thieves out to catch any unwary tourists - don't be one of them!

But DO enjoy all that this wonderful store has to offer.

Has all the best products you could imagine but no class. Felt like a fancy indoor market to me with no real substance. The staff seemed only interested in you if you search your pockets and pull out a Ferrari key. Wouldn't recommend it when Harrods is so close and they have a warm smile for everyone.

My go to place for presents. Purchased a lot of Jo Malone recently. Always good service but some assistants are better than others.

The only store to be named the Best Department Store in the World four times, Selfridges today is more than just the sum of its products - it's a shopping experience that promises to surprise, amaze and amuse its customers by delivering extraordinary customer experiences.
