Chicken drumsticks were delicious , plenty of meat on them too. The pies are some of the nicest we've had highly recommended

Was there literally nothing on show to buy

We were delighted to find this butcher's shop, which was quite a surprise as we are vegetarian! Bill Maiden comes from a long line of butchers – his father Bill senior took over the premises in 1946. Bill specialises in locally reared meat, and stocks some fabulous award-winning sausages, and delicious pies. He is also a licensed game dealer. Don’t be fooled, though, this is so much more than a butcher’s. It is really a good old-fashioned general stores. There is a wonderful greengrocers to the left of the shop, with a fantastic display of fresh fruit and veg. There is also a wide range of local and regional produce including bread, cheese, cakes, jams, and many other essentials for your kitchen. Bill is a fantastic chap and a fount of local knowledge.

Good pie, bad chicken. Large chicken and mushroom pie was great; well filled and tasty. ‘Fresh’ chicken breast was in our fridge within 30 mins of purchase, but was off the next day. I was 50/50 whether it ‘had a smell’, so cooked it and tried a small piece and was on the loo with cold sweats 20 mins later. Just check what you’re buying before you leave the store.

Lovely butchers, everything from the traditional meats to the unusual. Very good prices and lovely service. We will be back soon.
