Abney Park cemetery is one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries in London, England.

Abney Park in Stoke Newington, in the London Borough of Hackney, is a historic parkland originally laid out in the early 18th century by Lady Mary Abney and Dr. Isaac Watts, and the neighbouring Hartopp family.

In 1840 it became a non-denominational garden cemetery, a semi-public park arboretum, and an educational institute, which was widely celebrated as an example of its time. A total of 196,843 burials had taken place there up to the year 2000. It is a Local Nature Reserve.

Such staggering beauty, nature relentlessly reclaiming itself in the midst of a human metropolis which never sleeps. Elaborate and simple grave headstones tinged green with moss, emerging from a carpet of fallen leaves and choked in enveloping strings of ivy. Skulking into a silent glade spliced with dying autumnal sun rays a startled urban fox glanced at me and swishing it's bushy tail arched and dived into a thicket of briary bushes, our brief encounter all too quickly ended. From the socially elevated and common citizenry to the heroic dead of two world wars eternally resting in the company of living cemetery wildlife, together in this precious mystical inner London oasis of calm and stillness!

One of my favourite local places for a chill and invigorating walk surrounded with nature. The graves are gorgeous, some really old. Just wish it was open a bit later in the evening, because they close at 4pm which I find quite early

The most beautiful spot for an urban, autumnal stroll. Adults and kids alike enjoy getting lost down the meandering paths. Hard to believe this quiet, tranquil woods is in the middle of a bustling London borough.

Cute cemetery with lots of history and architecture. Some very interesting people buried here, used to be a private cemetery. Zookeepera, actresses, all sorts you just have to go digging (please not literally). Lots of fun facts about the woodlands and birds which I found pleasant and wholesome for the soul.

What a find! I love an overgrown cemetery with park vibes. I was searching for some shade in the scorching London sun when I stumbled upon this park (which I’m sure everyone else already knows). To my astonishment it was also an old cemetery. Next time I’m in the vicinity I’ll make sure I have more time to browse the old head stones and enjoy the wildlife.

Peaceful, historic, curious, war memorial and family resting place. Nature and different birds, trees, plants and flowers creates a calming and relaxation effect. There are benches and alot of dog walkers if you fancy taking your pooch out for a walk. Beautiful church/Chapel in the centre designed of a cross.

Rambling and overrun, with endless rows of wonky gravestones. Densely packed with crumbling monuments but also there’s a clear love of wildlife shown by the keepers, who’ve usefully labelled some “star” trees with descriptions of what they are, where they come from and what’s happened to them over the years; each tree has a story. Easy to get to location too (if you come by bus) with a lovely cafe not too far away that sells delicious spicy beef empanadas... just can’t remember the name!
