Legend has it that the original church on this site was built by Edwin, 7th century King of Northumbria after victory in battle nearby. The first church dedicated to St Michael appears in the records in 1623, part of a thriving community on the road from Machynlleth to the coast, near the ports of Glandyfi and Derwenlas. Many in the community would have worked in the lead mines or furnace nearby.
The current hall like church dates from 1833. Famous Welsh poet R. S. Thomas served as vicar from 1956 to 67. He was extremely influential in the the church and the community. The church here is immortalised in his poem 'The Chapel'.
Inside the church are simple white walls and a black wood pulpit and pews. The monochromatic interior is contrasted by the triptych of beautiful stained glass in the apse of the chancel.
The churchyard features St Non's Well, one of many in Wales. Non is the mother of St David, patron saint of Wales. The well is said to possess healing properties.
