We loved Winchcombe and St. Peter's was a very memorable part of out visit. We were warmly welcomed and spent ages looking around and speaking with a steward about its history.

St Peter's Church in Winchcombe is one of the great wool churches in the Cotswolds, a reminder of the wealth of medieval wool merchants.
A Norman church stood on the site as part of the nearby Benedictine monastery but it fell into disrepair by the 15th century.
The church was rebuilt in 1458 in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The nave is high and wide, well-lit by the square-headed clerestory windows.
One of the more interesting features of the church is hidden behind curtains to protect it from sunlight. An altar cloth made from a number of 14th century vestments, thought to have been stitched by Queen Catherine of Aragon during her stay at nearby Sudeley Castle.
A pair of stone Saxon coffins can be found at the West end of the nave. Discovered during Regency era excavations of the monastery, the coffins are thought to have been for King Kenelm of Mercia and his son St Kenelm.

Fabulous gargoyles around church including Lewis Carroll's 'The MadHatter'. You can also look for the Winchcombe Imp and the black sheep inside.

A beautiful church to offer you a time of peace and quiet reflection. Winchcombe is also worth a look if you have time to spare.
