The Anglo-Saxon church of St Mary in Castro, or St Mary de Castro, is located on the highest part of Castle Hill, within the grounds of Dover Castle. It's in a prominent location with great views. It was built in about AD 1000 beside the Dubris Pharos (lighthouse) which was no doubt incorporated into the design, as its bell tower. St Mary was extensively restored in the 1860s and now incorporates beautiful stained glass windows. Being inside the Castle grounds, from its early Saxon beginnings, St Mary's has served garrisons within the castle and in the surrounding area. It's still a working place of worship today and a visit is highly recommended.

This church is very well-kept and it’s in good conditions. The architecture and style are quite interesting, very different from anything I have seen in England. Definitely worth a visit.

Church is still in an excellent condition and definitely worth a visit as it is only a quick stroll up the road on the way to the medieval part of the castle

The interior is unusual and the church is very old. There is much to remind one of the military history of the location. Very worthwhile coming to see the church if you have already paid to enter the castle. Coming to think of it, the church was the strongest memory I had from my previous visit to the castle in 1978.

Grade 2 listed Anglican church located right next door to the Roman lighthouse. An additional pocket of history within the historic grounds of Dover Castle.
