St Nicholas just highlights why Suffolk is so fabulous a county. The beautiful round tower and Norman entrance lead to a fabulous assortment of po-faced bench ends which grimace and stare at you. An intimate, elegant place. Combine it with Wordwell and Icklingham like I did!

St Nicholas church at Little Saxham was probably mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 as it has the most spectacular Norman round tower - one of 38 existing in Suffolk. It contains 3 bells, 2 trebles cast by Brasyers of Norwich dating 1424-1513 and a tenor from 1603 by Thomas Cheese of Bury St Edmunds.
It has National Heritage Grade 1 listing with it's round tower C11 or C12 as is the south porch. The north aisle and south porch are C14. whilst the octagonal font is C14 as is the piscina in the south wall. The early C17 octagonal pulpit with arcaded panel, canopy & back were restored in 1891 at around which were the poppy head benches with carved animals, the oak eagle lectern and stained glass window to the east chancel and the south window.
The vestry contains a huge baroque funeral monument to William, 1st Baron Crofts and his wife. Charles ll when visiting Newmarket races would often stay with the Crofts and attended a service at St Nicholas in 1670.
This lovely church is open daily for private prayer and viewing - well worth a visit.
