Where to start and what an interesting and beautiful place . To start with Covid and isolation on my mind here you can see the lepers squint a small hole in the outside wall directed at the high altar providing a view one at a time for the poor souls suffering from leprosy . Higher up on the opposite wall you can see the Washington Window which is said to be the inspiration for the Stars and Stripes American flag . The oldest depiction of the Washington coat of arms in glass . There is also a very touching memorial to Flying Officer Cyril Joe Barton who was deservingly awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in an air raid on Nuremberg . This interesting Abbey has a very colourful and fascinating history well woth a visit . There is an amazing Reredos , Hughs Pillar beautiful architecture and friendly staff . Founded by Benedict of Auxerre in 1069 and grade 1 listed this one shouldn't be missed .

A beautiful working church. The guides Simeon and Frank were very friendly and shared with us the history of the Abbey. Definitely worth visiting. Prices at the gift shop were surprisingly good. You can also recharge your battery with a hot/cold drink and a cake in the cafe within the Abbey.

Beautiful abbey the inside vaulted roof is amazing the staff were very friendly and helpful and knowledgeable. Takes a good hour to walk round and discover all the interesting parts to the abbey. A nice place to sit and reflect.

Wonderful atmosphere, beautiful stained glass windows and so much history. Extremely welcoming and helpful staff. Great refreshments, particularly the scones. Highly recommended.

A fascinating building with every style represented from Norman, through early Gothic and Decorated to Perpendicular late Gothic. Quirky, too... There's a cafe in the N Transept. Dogs are welcome, and their drinking bowl is in the cafe. Fine series of organ recitals in the summer...

Fantastic Abbey, but what really shone out were the activities when we visited. Of course the architecture and history are amazing, but what sets it apart is community participation. This isn't a stuffy place of worship where your quiet and pay for the privilege of entry. When we visited, there was a minecraft day going on where coders have created selby, and particularly the Abbey, in minecraft. There were lots of children about enjoying the day and the staff were so friendly. Well done to whoever organises these events. That's exactly what should happen in churches/ cathedrals / abbeys.

Quite amazing place, and totally unexpected in this market town. Architecture is great with some quite unusual carvings and very old monuments there. Lovley little cafe there, serving snacks and drinks. Like the story of the swans!
