Ladykirk Church, Our Lady Kirk of Steill, was built by King James IV soon after his siege and assault of Norham Castle in 1497. On returning from the siege of Norham Castle, James is said to have fallen from his horse into the Tweed. He attributed his survival to the intercession of the Virgin Mary.
The church is a fine example of late Scottish Gothic architecture, grander than its location required because of its royal patronage, and now home to a bust of King James IV. It is one of the few stone roofed churches in Scotland

This church was one of the unexpected surprises we encountered on our trip. By this stage we had seen more churches than I care to remember and didn’t want to come here but I am so glad we did, such an amazing place, a must to visit!!!

This is a beautiful and evocative building, having been built in Thanksgiving for the saving of James IV's life. It sits above the River Tweed opposite Norham Castle, scene of so many Border conflicts.
Sadly it is in part in poor condition, and is only occasionally used for services, so it feels a little unloved. But, unlike many Church of Scotland buildings, it is open; and it is well worth a visit.
