The Church of St Llwchaiarn in Llanllwchaiarn, near Newtown in Powys, is a quaint red brick church built towards the end of the Georgian period. The original church on the site was built at an unknown point in the medieval era. The roundness of the raised churchyard, if you discount the recent extensions, and the presence of several ancient yew trees suggestions a pre-Norman foundation. Two paintings exist of the original medieval church. Commissioned by Thomas Pennant in 1795, the watercolours by John Ingleby show the church before it was rebuilt. The current church was built from brick in 1815 after a fire gutted the earlier structure. The new church was initially a simple structure but in 1864 the chancel was extended and the tower added on. The church boasts two features of particular interest. The first is the medieval rood screen hidden away on the west gallery. This screen once stood in the now ruined St Mary's Church, before moving to St David's, both in Newtown. The screen was brought to Llanllwchaiarn in 2011 after St David's closed a few years before. The church is back open most days now. A small car park is available.
