St Garmon’s Church in St Harmon was first founded in the 6th century and developed into a clas in the 9th century. The church is sited on a raised, circular mound, suggesting pre-Christian origins. The dedication to St Garmon is derived from St Germanus of Auxerre, medieval French bishop who visited Britain after the Roman withdrawal in the early 5th century.
At some point, the medieval wooden church on the site was rebuilt in stone. This long, low and dark structure was demolished in 1821 and replaced with a smaller, lighter building. It had a fine plaster ceiling, west gallery for an organ and choir, and a triple level pulpit.
By the end of the 19th century, the Regency era church had fallen into disrepair and needed extensive renovations. It was transformed in 1908, the box pews, gallery and pulpit were removed; the ceiling was stripped and the Regency windows replaced with Perpendicular tracery, now featuring stained glass from A.O Hemming & Co and Celtic Studios.
The font is particularly interesting, the 12th century tub features a quartet of crudely carved faces.
