The Church of St Cynon in Tregynon sits in a round, raised churchyard. Together with its dedication to a 6th century saint, it is thought a place of worship may have existed on the site long before the current, 15th century church was built.
The roof timbers are the main feature to survive from that 15th century structure as it was remodelled in the 18th century by the Blayney family, lords of the manor at nearby Gregynog. A large monument to the Blayney’s occupies a large portion of the west wall on the nave, a second smaller monument to the last of the Blayney family, Arthur, can be found on the North wall.
More notable was the restoration by William Scott Owen in 1893, which included the addition pink marble reredos, Arts and Crafts style stencilling on the East all of the Chancel and the inclusion of the East window by Clayton and Bell.
The south wall of the chancel features a window depicting St Dorothea, St Benedict and an Angel. This glass was produced by Leonard Walker in 1922.
Inside the base of the tower, a functional storage/kitchen space, it is possible to see the vast, 15th century oak beams supporting the structure above. Notably, the timber topped bell tower contains a sun dial instead of a clock.
