St Michael's Church at the base of Rodney's Pillar is in a very rural part of Shropshire. The Church is very attractive and the grounds were well maintained. Services are regularly held but one is advised to establish the times of worship in advance.

The Church of St Michael in Criggion was built in the 1770s in Georgian style. The Flemish bond, red brick walls outline the original rectangular nave and small tower. Criggion itself lies within the Welsh county of Powys but it is very close to the border with Shropshire. The Breidden Hill which overshadows Criggion was once home to an iron age hill fort and now home to Admiral Rodney's Pillar. A general restoration took place in 1838 The Gothic chancel was added in ten years later, built of local stone, most likely from the nearby quarry. The round-headed nave windows were replaced with lancets to match the new chancel. Internally, the pulpit and pews are 18th century, the gallery dates from 1840. The stained glass in the nave dates from the 19th century renovation. Displayed in the chancel are the liturgical robes of Rev Leicester Darnwall, vicar from 1837 to 1890. First worn in 1848, it is said this was the first time a cope was worn in an English parish church since the Reformation. The bell dates from 1682 and may have been from a previous church on the site or another nearby church but records are vague and inconclusive.
