My teeth are far from perfect despite looking after them but I am still not convinced that my tooth had to be extracted with no alternatives offered to me. I have since visited other dentists who did mention other routes they might have taken before extracting. Layla's decision to extract was made suddenly and I was not offered any alternative solutions at all.
Furthermore, the latest filling I had resulted to a food trap as Layla left a gap between my filling and the next tooth (no contact was made between the two teeth). The area around that tooth is sore from all the food trapped and I can't chew comfortably two months after the filling was done. I use interdental brushes in the area but the gums are still super sore.
I really and truly regret joining this dentist and I won't be setting foot in there ever again.
Why I was not told about this when I was booking an appointment.
So in just 10-15 minutes she said it’s done, I am really disappointed and will not use this Lewis grove again, please avoid as much as you can.
Unethical
I attended a dental appointment on Monday 12th October 2020 at 12:35pm. I received a call the dentist stating that routine NHS appointments are no longer available and routine dental appointments would be £54. Her specific words were that all NHS patients would need to pay privately if they wish to have a routine dental appointment. I agreed to pay this price for a scale and polish as I had not been able to see a dentist since lockdown began in London in late March.
What follows next shocks, sickens and disappoints me.
The dental services that I attended the surgery for were misrepresented and overcharged, unbundling the procedures and services. The dentist attempted to bill me for a consultation that I did to request or agree to, charge me for x-rays that I didn’t request or agree to, providing additional at cost services to increase billings and claims amounts.
The dentist proceeded to do a routine dental check for gum disease which she called a ‘consultation’ and told me that this would be £54, with each additional dental x-ray costing £22 each – with two x-rays required, then said that the scale and polish that I was attending the dental surgery for would be a further £78. The total cost for this procedure – a Band 1 course of treatment is ordinarily £22.70 as an NHS procedure. This covers an examination, diagnosis, including x-rays, advice on how to prevent future problems, a scale and polish, and preventative care such as the application of fluoride varnish or fissure sealant. I was shocked that the dentist was happy to do this procedure at a private cost, but not at an NHS cost.
The dentist also asked me if I wanted a mouth guard and advised, with a mouth guard costing upwards of £300. Keep in mind I had already paid half the cost of a mouth guard that I had never received after a previous appointment was cancelled due to the same dentist breaking her neck and then never following up on the cancelled appointment.
From 8 June 2020, dentists have been given the green light to reopen as long as they have social distance measures and the right personal protective equipment in place so these highly unethical pricing strategies are particularly disturbing. I like to think that when I visit a dentist I am visiting someone who cares about the health of my teeth rather than a salesman/retail dentist.
The practice and my experience were highly unethical and I can honestly say it was the worst experience at any dental practice ever. It seemed like a scam and I am concerned about how long Lewis Grove have been trying to charge NHS patients for routine appointments, whilst also bumping up the costs for additional procedures and unwanted consultations and x-rays once patients arrive. It’s fraudulent and misrepresentation – with the pandemic being no excuse for unethical dentistry.
Terribly disappointed and a serious review is needed I'm afraid.
