St John the Baptist Church is visible almost all the way down the main street in Bishop's Castle. Its medieval tower is attached to a 19th century church, but there are some 18th century features too.
The inside of the church is decorated with lots of flowers. It's light and airy, with an interesting pattern of roof beams, particularly over the altar.
The font near the south transept is reported to be 12th century; there are a number of interesting graves in the graveyard and a crypt below the chancel.

I went to see the famous grave of an African native "slave". Although the stone was behind perspex and quite difficult to see, there were many other headstones worth looking at, particularly one of the Burgess brothers. If you go to into the church door archway you can pick up a leaflet with information on all the morale graves which gives you some background on them. There are some war graves too.

Beautiful church but the graveyard is largely overgrown and therefore disrespectful to its own history. The reason given that it's for nature does not tally. There are areas that could easily be laid out for this but they've chosen not to. A pity as this could be a fine example.
