St Mary the Virgin's Church

Spectacular church open daily. It's extremely close to Stansted airport but very rural and has a fantastic interior

Delighted to find this is open daily 11am to 3pm and that there's a car park behind the church which is reasonably weatherproof. Beautiful wild flowers in the graveyard. For me the Romanesque doorways are a highlight. Some interesting monuments too: the 1614 monument to Hester Salusburye, has beautifully defined lace and costume details, while the massive monument to Thomas Middleton has a fabulously gushing statement about his achievements and character.

I'm not sure how to rate a church, my family was there to place my much loved and missed daughters ashes during a memorial, the member of staff that was present was helpful and discreet. The graveyard itself was very full with headstones going back hundreds of years. We didn't go in the church itself.

We stayed here over night "champing". It's a beautiful church and a great experience. Some lovely walks.

Really nice church to visit if churches interest you. I believe no services take place now and maintenance of the building is done by a preservation group.
