St Petronilla, Whepstead is a grade 2 listed building of the medieval period which was restored in 1869. Its dedication of St. Petronilla is thought to be unique in a parish church, although there is some uncertainty as to who Petronilla really was, prior to the Reformation the church was dedicated to St Thomas Beckett. The chancel arch pillars date from late C11 or C12. The nave window on the south wall has integral steps up to the rood loft and piscina bowls cut into the dropped cill on both south and north windows. The south porch is under the squat C15 tower which houses a peal of 5 bells. The original tower had a spire which was lost is a storm in the C17 but was not replaced. The church is open daily for viewing or private prayers.
