This building was built on the remains of an Augustinian Priory founded circa 1110 by Ralph Fitz Brien and his wife Emma. It was the only English house ever to be affiliated to the Church of St Leonard at Noblat in France (now part of a World Heritage Site.
Being a Non-English Mother House (Alien), it was dissolved by Henry VI in 1844 and it's possessions granted to King's College , Cambridge , the extensive archive is now subject to cataloguing projects.
The south doorway is of the Norman period. However the stone sundial on the south wall is reputed to be the oldest in the county dating from the C11 - the markings relating to the service times.
The south side window of the nave dates from 1320 were originally in the east window together with those depicting Thomas of Canterbury & Edward the Confessor.
The screen at the west end of the church is very unusual, obviously old and apparently difficult to date!
The font is one of the finest in Suffolk being Norman from the late C12.
The church is open for private prayers and well worth a visit.
