Go in the right time and it may be quite lovely, but otherwise it’s best to stay away unless you want to be annoyed.
After seeing the images here on Google reviews, I had to visit St. Dunstan in the East during my tour of London. The pictures really don't do it justice. There's a sacred quietude to this spot that must be experienced. The church was first built in Saxon times, then was partially destroyed during the blitz. The moment you step into the ruins, you can feel the history and heritage around you. It makes you want to pause from the hustle and bustle and just soak it in. Being off the main thoroughfare of traffic, you'll be able to do just that.
Because it's an open-air interior, you can enjoy the breeze or eat lunch while sitting on the benches. It's usually populated by residents and tourists without feeling crowded--mostly as a place for people to relax, take breaks, and do some quiet work or reading. I consider it a must-see location for any visit to London (and photographers will have treat with the gorgeous architecture as well).
The Church of St Dunstan was originally built around 1100 and was severely damaged in 1666 by the Great Fire of London. The Church was damaged again in the Blitz of 1941. In 1967 the City of London decided to turn the remains into a public garden, which opened in 1970.
It is an easy walk from Monument or Tower Hill stations.
The gardens are busy during the day, so if you want to see it empty, arrive before 9am.
