Matt Helm Guitar Teacher

I have been having guitar lessons with Matt since early 2014 and I have found him to be an excellent teacher. I was a complete beginner and had never picked up a guitar before and Matt has tailored his lessons accordingly, ensuring they are stimulating and challenging, whilst progressing at just the right pace. Matt is also very personable, making the lessons good fun, which is very important as learning guitar as an adult does have its frustrations...I recommend Matt highly...

I've been learning guitar with Matt since 2014 and can wholeheartedly recommend him as a personable and highly professional teacher. Matt's lessons are invariably fun and rewarding, whilst instilling the values of practice and other good discipline as a guitar player. Matt always manages to accommodate my musical tastes in the course of lessons too.

Matt has been teaching our 8 year-old for the last two years. He has been a very patient, encouraging teacher. He adapts lessons to enable his student’s progress and enjoyment in playing guitar. I like the fact that he also teaches classic music reading (not chords). Matt knows how to motivate young students and his zoom lessons work really well for us.

Matt has been more than a teacher, he’s been a coach and mentor that has helped my son achieve more than he thought was possible. That’s rare and game changing.

Matt has been brilliant with accommodating my son’s music requirements. He didn’t want to go down the traditional grading route, simply to learn songs he enjoyed.
Matt is good at teaching a wide range of genres as my son’s taste of music changed, and he adapted his teaching style in line with my son’s progression. He didn’t just teach the song but embedded theory and discussed techniques so that my son could apply it to other challenges.

That confidence building has been pivotal and has gone beyond guitar and into self taught drumming. This has now progressed to my son writing his own songs.

Matt is an excellent guitar teacher. He has been teaching my daughter for almost six years and he’s gone above and beyond the simple teaching requirements. His skills, experience and passion for music nurtured her interest in the field as well as prepared her for grade exams. He was a mentor for her conservatoire applications and helped her throughout the process, from choosing pieces to editing videos for auditions, as well as writing references. His patience makes him a fantastic mentor, and his dedication to music is seen through the wide range of genres he introduced my daughter to - from blues to metal, from jazz to musical theatre. We are extremely happy with him and we couldn’t recommend him enough.

I decided to start electric guitar lessons with Matt having played classical guitar as a teenager. Matt has made the transition really easy and has allowed the lessons to follow the musical styles and songs of interest to me. Matt also teaches theory and techniques in the songs we cover, so my playing is constantly improving. I highly recommend Matt as a teacher.

I have had guitar lessons with Matt for about 5 years now. I started off having self taught myself a bit and wanted to get my technique straightened out, learn some scales and how to improvise, without too much expectation other than having fun and being able to sound a bit like ACDC! I would say that Matt has helped me achieve far beyond what I was expecting; after a few years of improving my confidence he encouraged me to find a band and now guitar is one of my biggest passions. Matt's attention to detail and commitment to his students is outstanding. Also, during Covid we had to switch to video call lessons, where Matt has been able to continue providing his usual high standard of teaching. I highly recommend Matt to anyone of any skill and confidence level who is looking for a guitar teacher.

My teenage son has been learning the electric Guitar with Matt for two years, both in person and this year online. He has progressed through grades 3, 4 and 5. Matt is personable, patient and accommodating. He is also approachable and easy to communicate with. Matt inspires and encourages my son and we would highly recommend him as a teacher.
