I brought a stat in for a set up and I can confirm that they’ve earned this reputation for a reason. Not only did they complete the work to a very high standard, efficiently and at a reasonable price - they also went to the effort of taking time out of their schedules to chat with me & ensure they got things right. I learned a lot from them about the instrument itself & guitars more in general.
Upon completion, I found the action on my strat had been set a tad low and whilst I must stress this was through no fault of their own but mine for not being specific enough, they were more than happy to raise it slightly to closer match another guitar I had.
A big thanks to John, Tom & Liam. A genuinely great, friendly team of people who will now undoubtedly be my first port of call for any guitar related work.
I'm glad I did! The first visit involved an appraisal of the guitar a good long chat about stuff, some of which lead to tweaks on the guitar's action and truss rod. The types of fret wire were discussed and samples inspected, differences explained. Notes taken on some comments.
The work was completed swiftly and the workmanship was enough to convince me that some tech work I'd previously done was better left to the experts, I'm good - they're much better (more experienced, steadier hand and eye, and superior attention to detail). I wish I had close up pictures of the frets before - they were chewed!
Jonathan understood the foibles of my 1984 Strat with its weird trem and my work-around and he proposed some adaptations to help with string changes.
This week, I took my semi-solid down for a new nut, one of Feline's Earvana nuts - I've Buzz Feiten's nut on a Strat and the Earvanas sound as good to my ear. Lots of careful measuring and a bit of history about the nut sizes offered by earvana.
I met a different member of staff, same curiosity, thorough exam of the guitar.. easy conversation, proposal for work needed and overall reassurance that the guitar and changes were in safe hands.
The photos show the mod to the Graphtec saddles to make getting the strings in and out much easier (Jonathan's idea), the frets (not one piece of varnish pulled out when removing the old frets... the careful process for this was casually explained before work started), and the new nut needed to get the height back after 40 years of fretware...and the fret ends perfect and on stainless steel!
I took a 5 string bass in for a setup, hoping to get a pro to cast their eye over it and get it playing a bit better. Probably a very common request for such a company, so I was somewhat surprised to be sat down for around 20mins while they gave my instrument a proper inspection in front of me.
They seemed to really care about getting the best result even out of such a run of the mill job, approaching it with curiosity and respect.
They noticed some issues I hadn’t with the nut and a few of the frets, and suggested some optional remedial work which I gladly took them up on. Long story short it’s made a massive difference to how it plays, and increased my enjoyment no end. Great result. Cheers guys!
I changed my fretsize and the mirror finished superbly installed fret job I got was perfect.
I enjoy the guitar twice as much as before.
Johnathan and Tom have the best of skills.
