Nice mixed area of hills, ponds, forests, woods and heathland. Good for nature including deers and kingfisher. Great viewpoint at the top. Theirs also a couple of car parks. The area is really underrated the variety of habitat is actually breathtaking. The main trail takes you across health into the forest where their is a really good chance to spot deer. The birdlife is good too with all sorts of unusual birds and their calls. The viewpoint is quite a walk but its worth it with wonderful views of the region.

Love Putternham common as one of my best walking spots with the dog, I’m fairly sure he loves it to, as he gets very excited as we enter the car park.

There are stunning views, and lovely forested areas, even some nice ponds and some great trails.

Throughout the year the common changes, from misty mornings in spring to the trees turning orange in Autumn.

Loved every bit of this place. I am so glad I live pretty close to Guildford. This is beautiful. The paths are magical. It is pretty much a walk in the woods. Excellent place to take your dogs over a weekend. There are two lakes or ponds or whatever you wish to call them. Or maybe there are three. One of them apparently has blue green algae. We couldn't put our finger on which one it was. There were grown men fishing at the pond when boards were put up asking not to fish. These men are precious about their fish, so they will tell you all sorts of fictional things to keep you and your furry friend away from the pond. There were no notices near the pond about blue green algae that we saw. But our dog took a swim in flowing water and it wasn't covered in any algae. After all, algae is known to thrive in stagnant water. So please don't blindly believe the guys who come to fish.
I found this walk on Komoot.
Part of the route is a walk across the country lane, so beware of vehicles passing.
6.5 Kms of bliss! Plenty of hills, and plenty of dog walkers. Our dog had the best day!
There is a unique feature we noticed here, there are some places near the Top Car Park, about 700meters to a km away from it, where you can hang your dog's filled poo bag while you go ahead and complete your walk. This is extremely convenient as there are no bins anywhere apart from the main car park. So keep that in mind when going for a walk with your furry friend.
Also there aren't any public toilets nearby. We had to drive 10 mins to the nearest service station to use the loo.

If you get to the Top Carpark...the views are beautiful. Many picnic spots around about that beckons a visit back in summer. The drive into the car park is murder with potholes. Drive careful....I felt it even though was super slow in SuV .. walk from the car park is super too...with easy paths and some that are up n down. You choose. Worth a visit.

Parking is free [as of 2022]. Lovely area which is unspoiled and rich with ancient history making you feel like you’re walking back in time. The trees are old, mossy and if they could talk, would probably have some interesting tales. The woodland is filled with ferns which turn a lovely burnt orange in the winter. The ground is very sandy which is particularly nice during the winter months. My dog loved it and was skipping and hopping everywhere she ran. Some mountain bikers use the tracks so beware if your dog chases them. All the people there were nice, polite and clearly decent human-beings. I would say very family friendly. The pond area was sweet too. Only criticism is the road leading to the car park is diabolical and you need a 4x4 to conquer the pot holes.

Nice spot for an afternoon walk, I walked the perimeter of the common as I could see and it took around 1 hour 40. I was stopping to take photos too. Some ponds in there as well as some woodland and some more open sections.

There's something very special about this place...maybe the feeling of deep history?...The views from the top carpark are beautiful and the choice of walks very good. A stroll down to the lakes through the forest and then back up to the carpark never ceases to please....lovely place.

It's an amazing place, who would believe you would find such scenery in the prosperous south-east of England, just a few miles from the capital? I would highly recommend this apart from the reservation that I really want to keep it a secret!
