The swing bridge and lockgates have been recently painted by Greenwich council. Unfortunately you can't get anywhere near because of large fences. The lock gives access to the Thames from a very long and shallow dock. My understanding is that the dock was used by barges that were loaded with guns and ammunition from the Royal Arsenal. These barges would take their cargo out to the warships waiting on Gallion's Reach immediately outside the lock.
