Brilliant, you can feel the age, easily see/imagine the Roman soldiers milling around. King Charles stood at this Tower and watched his army defeated in battle nearby. It's free, you can walk around the whole city Wall's for free.

No admission fee to walk the historic walls of the city, some amazing views of the city below. Does get high at certain points so be aware if you have young children that may be afraid

Unfortunately the tower was not open - is it ever? No signage to tell either way.

Located on the north-eastern side of the city walls. There are a series of steps leading up to the entrance to King Charles Tower. Although entrance to within the tower itself is not permitted, you do get a good view from atop the stairs leading up.

In my opinion this is the most beautiful of the towers on the city walls. It looks particularly dramatic when viewed from the canal below. The tower gets its name from the popular belief that King Charles I watched from here as his army was defeated at the Battle of Rowton Moor in 1645. The tower has rarely been open when I've visited though on one occasion I did get to see an exhibition of Roman archaeology here. There's a viewing platform in front of the tower but if you climb the steps to the first floor entrance you will get an even more spectacular view of the cathedral and its green, the canal and the city - that is if the gate is not locked!
