(Not sure why it hasn't recorded my name here, as I am logged in!)
After receiving a glowing referral to these people (from our lovely estate agent) for conveyancing on a house purchase, and getting a breakdown of costs over the phone from Neil Richards, we went ahead and engaged him. But, a week later, the promised Legal Pack still hadn't arrived. I rang to find out why, and asked politely if having to chase them at these early stages of the process (i.e. before we even got things started!) meant that the whole process would likely be slow. I felt, as a very nervous first-time buyer in a different country, that was a fair question because as we're on a deadline for completion and my question was driven by our need to feel reassured that whatever company we choose to deal with will have our interests at heart. But instead of assuring me that matters would indeed be well in hand in a timely manner for us as new clients, Richards just told me I'd be better of to go elsewhere!
He chose (and of course it was a concious choice!) arrogance over empathy. He CHOSE to take umbrage, instead of simply reassuring me he would chase things up and work with us to buy our house. Clearly, he either doesn't actually know how to do what's required or he already has enough Clients and doesn't need any more. That's fine of course, but there's a big difference between not wanting new clients or really knowing how to help them, and actually treating them like dirt. And he's the 'head honcho', apparently! Shame on him. Begs the question, really, about what sort of work ethic he's fostering down there with the other staff, but we'll leave that to other poor souls to find out.
Having lost a full precious week waiting around for someone who doesn't give a rats, we've now instructed a different firm, who welcomed us warmly, and who we believe will handle the conveyancing competently for us, as well as a lot of other important legal stuff coming up in the coming year or three that we're a bit worried about that we'll need a lot of support in dealing with. Personally, I wouldn't touch Richards and Lewis with a barge pole. Who with any real sense would tell a person standing there waving money at them, to take it somewhere else???
If you want people who actually care about you as a client, who will work in your interests, do what the man here says: "look elsewhere".
