It was my grandfather's birthday and I had decided to get him a bottle of wine. I usually go to Selfridges to pick up a nice bottle (foolishly perhaps?) when a colleague suggested I try out Amathus instead. I was very glad for the suggestion as I got an unusual bottle of wine at a very reasonable price and didn't have to fight off tourists to get it.

The prices were fairly reasonable but more importantly the staff were very knowledgable. I know nothing about wine and it was nice to have someone help me out without treating me like an idiot. They also have quite a good selection of cigars too.

Pricey (you're in the Square Mile, so what do you expect?), but great selection of whisky, gin and some of the rarer spirits and liqueurs. I liked: the person behind the desk, who was knowledgeable about my current craze of rye whiskey, and the difference between green and yellow Chartreuse, but also had the Cocteau Twins playing on the music system. No Dislike, except for the damage this shop is causing to my wallet.

Good in-store selection and the staff is helpful in terms of placing orders for you.

Have a range of Scandinavian spirits that are not the easiest to source in London.

I've been in this branch of Amathus a few times, searching for various different drinks (Wine, Gin, Whisky, Vodka). I've been served by a mixture of people and each time I've found the staff to be incredibly friendly and helpful (and the drinks have been very good!).

They have an enyclopedic knowledge of the drinks they sell, always able to give a good recommendation based on who I'm buying for and what my budget is (and not turning their noses up at me when my budget is at the lower end of their options).

You pay a small premium for shopping here, but in my opinion it's well worth the extra quid or two for the professional service and excellent recommendations!

Another lovely Amathus store. This time located in the immensely popular Leadenhall Market. When visiting the banking district I would most definitely recommend popping in for a browse. Amazing selection of wines and spirits as is usual with Amathus and if they don't have your desired brand they can order it for you. Staff are friendly as well.

Had the best costumer experience!
The guys are super knowledgeable and helpful choosing the great (wine) fit to my Friday evening!
Considering the central, historical and suggestive location, the prices are very competitive!
I'll definitely be back!
Thank you Amathus team!

The place looks cosy and inviting when you first approach it, with bottles on floor to ceiling shelves. The shop minder (not sure if it was the owner) seemed to be an approachable and friendly chap, chatting with the customer in front of me, and commenting about how she clearly knew exactly what she wanted. When it came to my turn, I asked him if he had stock of the Aberfeldy single malt 18 yo. He turned to his shelves, then looked at his stock on his screen, and announced that he did not have it in stock. If he had stopped there, it would have been fair enough, but he went on to add "....assuming it exists". I was quite taken aback and assured him that it did, and was about to offer to show him what it would look like by doing a search on my phone, but then I realised that his remark did not make sense and indeed was quite rude; if he doubted it existed then why check his shelves and his stock screen? If he did not even know what it was, or that it existed, then it spoke volumes of his lack of product knowledge. And if indeed he knew what it was, then why make that passing remark unless it was to show his disdain of me? As a Singaporean who loves London, visiting for the first time post COVID, seeking to rekindle fond memories, it was a sad, disappointing and immediate turn off, and I decided not only to go elsewhere to spend my money, but also to write this review. I had thought I might have a pleasant experience talking to a knowledgeable friendly person about good whiskies, but sadly all I got was a sarcastic comeback. No, I will not go back there again. It still gets two stars though because it does have decent stock, just not what I was looking for, and definitely no pleasant people attending to you.
