Small local museum over three floors containing artifacts ranging from the Roman period through to the modern era, with nice local additions.

The museum is free to enter but there are donation boxes located throughout to help support its upkeep.

The museum is rather small indeed but the good thing is, it's free of charge.

It's a 3-story building. On the ground floor, there's a large model showing the Winchester time in the old time. There are also a few exhibits related to Jane Austen, who spent the last eight year of her life in this town.

On the second and third floor, there are exhibits, artifacts and modern day interactive computer displays that depict the history of the town in medieval time and Tudor period.

£5.50 for an annual pass, can't go wrong really.

Situated on three floors

Only down side, I'm not sure how accessible it is for those with limited mobility.

As other reviewers have attested, this is a small museum over three floors in the very centre of Winchester. It covers Winchester's history from the Roman era until the late Victorian period. There is a superb, incredibly detailed large scale model of Winchester on the ground floor, which is worth a visit alone. Entrance used to be free, but now fees are charged. Sign of the times, I'm afraid. As at Jun 22: adults £5.50; concession £4.50; child £2.75. Tickets are an annual pass, so entitle holders to limitless free re-entry for a year from purchase date. A 'combo' ticket can also be bought, which also entitles entry to the Westgate Museum; an adult ticket is £7.00. Staff are extremely pleasant and helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. For anyone interested in the history of Winchester, I highly recommend a visit.

I visited today, I had an amazing experience. I could not see everything as I got there late but I saw the most important part to me which is the skeleton discovered in Winchester. It absolutely made my day or even my year, I got to know about this from a TV series Meet The Ancestors long ago, I was so happy to see it. I will come back again to discover more, thank you for the experience.

Very cool museum with lots of very special artefacts. I loved the little glass vases and cups found on the top floor, and the jewellery. Staff also very friendly.

Another awesome little museum jam-packed with local/regional history from pre-Roman times to the Anglo Saxons and Victorian era. Great artefacts on display, lots of information and friendly staff - should definitely be included in any trip to Winchester!
