Must say, the service we received from Gary was second to none. He is very knowledgable and not at all pushy in his sales technique. Very enjoyable experience.
I'm primarily a guitarist so that's where my interest lies. The guitar selection is good with the majority of the stock coming in low end and a healthy amount of the decent Epiphone/Fender Player series and such. I'm not knocking it, I have a Player Telecaster myself and it's more than passable but does fall short against Japanese and of course USA models. There is an excellent selection of amplification though. I bought a Marshall valve combo here a year or so ago and it is outstanding. The acoustic selection also has a great range in a separate room with lots of seating, with some affordable Martin's knocking around and a couple of really beautiful Gibson models. There are also separate rooms you can test gear out in should you not wish to showcase your skills in public. Upstairs is a drum showroom with mostly electric kits - the 'please don't play the kits' sign is as you'd imagine, quite hard to abide by. On my most recent visit I wasn't approached by any staff at all to see if they could help but that didn't particularly bother me. If you're after an instrument or just a covetous browse, this place is well worth a visit, with added benefits of a free coffee machine downstairs and ample parking outside.
Decided to go and try out a guitar that I'd been eyeing up for a while. The guitar I wanted was much cheaper in a shop over 3 hours drive from me. After checking the PMT website I noticed that Portsmouth had this exact guitar on the shelf (just at a higher price). After looking through the PMT website, I noticed that they advertise price matching! After seeing that, I decided to take the hour drive to Portsmouth and go and get more hands on with the guitar to make sure I liked it before buying. After fighting my way through the store that had empty cardboard boxes everywhere I found the guitar I was looking for. A member of staff welcomed me, when I asked to get it off the hanger and have a look. After having the guitar in my hands for a minute or so, I decided that it was right for me and was prepared to purchase. (Especially with the confidence of seeing every single guitar in the shop had a label hanging from the headstock advertising "we price match every day") I spoke to one of the staff behind the till and showed him the website that had the guitar for cheaper. After he verified it was the same guitar, then a few minutes of him looking at his screen he said " we can't match that price as we would only make £30 on that guitar which isn't enough profit ". He offered to speak to a manager to see what pice he could do, but admitted that he couldn't get close to the other shop. I told him that if he can't match that price, I would buy from the other shop. At this point he let me walk out of the door.
Very disappointed with the whole attitude towards price matching and especially with the comment of not making enough profit.
Really happy to actually see the guitar, touch it, play it before buying. I now have the guitar on order from the cheaper shop.
