Amazed at the very quick repair within 1/2 hour of a favourite pair of glasses, where the frame was broken at the hinge!

Awful service and extremely rude ownership

I asked this company to put new lenses into an existing frame, having used them only a month or so previously for a new pair of glasses. Whilst the service on the first pair was adequate my recent experience has been terrible to say the least.

Towards the end of March the company called me to advise that my glasses were ready for collection. When I visited on 29/3/18 to collect the glasses I noticed a mark on the right lens that appeared to be a scratch. The staff member quickly dismissed it as simply not been cleaned properly and proceeded to wipe them and give them back to me. The mark was still visible, so I felt them and it clearly was a scratch. She took them away into the back and came back a few minutes later to apologise and confirmed it was a scratch and she didn’t know how it passed quality control.

They then called me just over a week later to advise that the glasses we fixed and I could collect. When I visited the shop this time the glasses we still not properly cleaned so I asked for a cleaning cloth. Simply rubbing the lenses with a soft cloth, and the lens fell out in my hand. Upon closer inspection it was apparent that the frame was cracked in two places. The shop assistant then has the audacity to say “Well they wasn’t like that when I gave them to you!” So off they go to the back office and minutes later someone more senior comes out to say that it is their policy that used frames are at the risk of the customer. Nothing about the fact that they screwed up the first time and heating and reheating in a short space of time could have had an affect! Then the shop assistant walks back in with my glasses and drops them on the floor hitting the feet of the desk! So I said to the owner, is that how they got broken the first time!?!? complete shambles.

As a compromise they offer to bring some similar frames in and offer me a discount on the frames. So again I visit the store (24/4/18) and am presented with a selection of frames by who I can only assume was the owner (An elderly female). I make a selection and am then told that a £180 frame would be available to me for £155 including the lenses. To me this is not acceptable. The company didn’t even have the courtesy to accept partial blame in this and offer me the frames at cost price. So I explained that I would prefer to speak to Trading Standards to find a solution and the woman grins at me and say “Would you like a personal recommendation?… My husband works there”. So obviously she felt that regardless of my complaint, nothing would be done as she had family connections.

I was completely astounded by how smug this woman was. She even stepped towards me to smile as she said it! I never write reviews (good or bad) but I cannot believe how poor this service was from this company that I felt I should share my experiences to save anyone else the same problems.

So here are my thoughts. Gentleman who tested my eyes made me feel unwelcome and awkward.
He repeatedly ignored my polite requests to explain why the prescription he was suggesting seemed blurred and worse than that in my current spectacles. Eventually he told me not to worry as my eyes would adapt to the new perscription.
I had a similar experience with another Optician years ago, which resulted in me being left with a useless pair of specs, so I was a trifle apprehensive.
Then I went out into the area where new frames are. Here a Lady asked to look at my glasses, disappeared out the back with them for a few minutes and then came back with them. During these few minutes one of my lens got a huge scratch right across it.
I left without purchasing new glasse as I intended and will never go back.

I have used Evans and Jones for the past 30 years, and simply cannot fault them for customer care and service. Visited today after my glasses broke, and Paula was absolutely amazing (as always) so very helpful, honest with advice, and nothing was too much trouble. She even managed to track down identical frames for me as I love my glasses so much!
