I've just completed the 5 day canoeing trip on the Great Glen (Fort William to Inverness), canoeing lochs and canals during the day, dinner and camping on the banks of the lochs at night.
It's a wonderful trip and the scenery is breathtaking. Unfortunately we were rather unlucky with the weather (it's Scotland, it has been known to rain there....), but our guide Phil did a fantastic job of supporting us, encouraging a team approach, keeping everyone safe, and making sure that all of us were able to complete the trip.
The weather made it quite a challenging trip, but that meant a huge sense of achievement and I enjoyed it along the way. I have some health issues that made it extra challenging for me and felt very much supported by TNR and our guide Phil, who went above and beyond what i would have expected.
Pre-trip info was very good, equipment was good quality and in good condition. In the check boxes, I ticked as suitable for families with kids (I haven't checked if kids are allowed on this trip, we were all adults) - I think this trip would be great with teenagers, but for younger kids I'd pick something shorter than a 5 day trip.
Overall, highly recommended.
The staff are all friendly and experienced, the facilities are excellent and well located. My friend and I did both the canoe tour over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, and the introduction to White Water lesson.
Joe lead us on both activities and while he was a capable and informative guide - not only did he teach us to paddle a canoe, and talk about things on the route and the local wildlife, but he also recommended several fantastic other things to do and see in the local area, as well as some good bars and restaurants - but where he really excelled was as a coach. He was able to work with us and assess the level we were both at, moving quickly through the basics to what we both needed to work on and was good at reading what we were doing and thinking, offering us tailored tuition on a perfect part of the river. We left much more confident and now have lots to work on and practice when back in our local waters. He was clearly very passionate about what he does, and was just great fun to be around!
We look forward to coming back and getting some more coaching as well as trying out some of their other activities.
Zak, our instructor and Alex the safety support were both brilliant. They worked incredibly hard to make sure everyone had great fun and an exhilarating experience.
Would definitely recommend and use them again. Thank you all.
