Historic old heart of Mitcham. The pond itself used to be a water-splash for wooden-wheeled vehicles to keep the wheel-joints tight (a process called wheel-plimming), and although access to the water splash is now barred to traffic by bollards it's still there. Now it's just a pond where people feed ducks and geese and sadly quite a few street-drinkers gather on the benches.

There was a historic pub next to the pond called The Three Kings, the pub post and sign can still be seen in on "The Piece" which is the small island in the pond. The pub closed many years ago but the building remains and is listed.

Nearby are many old historic buildings some of which still have their characteristic white timber weatherboarding which used to be a feature of many north Surrey buildings; although Mitcham is now within the London Borough of Merton, it was formerly part of the county of Surrey and postally the address remains as "Mitcham, Surrey".

Sadly Mitcham has degenerated to become very run down and is mostly just a traffic junction with far too many betting shops and lots of street-drinkers. But try to see past that. A short walk away along London Road you can see some of the old glories of the area, such as Mitcham Cricket Green which is reputed to be the oldest continuously-used cricket green in existence since 1685. The Burn Bullock and White Hart pubs are adjacent (both sadly closed) but clearly show that they were once major coaching inns catering to the large and wealthy crowds which used to attend cricket matches back in its shadier days when immense sums used to be gambled even on a single wicket. As a result there are a lot of grand and ornate houses all around the cricket green and also around the adjacent green where the old fire station and Vestry Hall now stand.

Going the back to Three Kings Piece and a short walk north brings you to Eagle House, a very grand old mansion which was in a sorry state of repair until recently having been used for many years as a teacher training centre. Sadly there is no public access but it may be worth checking out if it takes part in the Open House days which occur a few times annually in the UK. Head south along Commonside West and after a few minutes you arrive at another old coaching inn now turned into a Toby carvery restaurant, and on the way is a small local pub, The Windmill Inn, which I've never visited but is still open.

Wonder why they called this three Kings pond. I know of the pond, tick but three Kings? Is there any chance some royalty stayed here and wanted to put a stamp? 🤔, I wonder. Still digging.. I'll get back to you on this one
