We had a lovely mid-week lunch at Gilbeys and the place was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday. The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The food came well presented and we had no complaints about portion size. Both starters and mains were delicious and I would consider the meal to be good value given the location. The place is fairly small but they have made the most of the period features of the building. There's also a small outside seating area that would no doubt be very pleasant in the summer months. I don't doubt we'll be back.

One of the biggest spoils I've ever had.. Gilbey's was absolutely magical. Their St. Valentines 5 course tasting menu was exceptional and they went above and beyond to ensure we had the best time! Favorite dish had to be the Sloe Gin-Cured Breast of Merrifield Farm Duck but by the time I got to that course I was so full I couldn't finish the plate! Its times like these I wish I had a bigger stomach because that food was absolutely phenomenal! What an experience 🥰🥂

Absolutely perfect meal. Sandi organised our wedding rehearsal dinner for us and communication was exemplary. We had 2 coeliacs and other allergies and were allowed to order anything off the menu and it was adapted. The service was responsive and caring and completely unobtrusive. All the food was delicious, everyone thought it was some of the nicest restaurant food they’ve ever had. Drinks were great too, especially the champagne. We couldn’t recommend Gilbeys for a special occasion more.

Have always had an enjoyable time. Food has always been of the best quality. Service is attentive but not intrusive. Looking forward to going back for a special birthday celebration

I think the food went downhill! I ordered the chicken, they describe it on their menu in such a mouth watering way. But it was simply a greasy fatty chicken thigh with very thick skin on, and what make it even worse they melted butter on top of the saltiest oiliest risotto I ever tasted in my life.
Absolute disaster.
My partner had the roast pork and it was ok according to him.
My dessert was the panna cota, it tasted like it was made last month, the staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was nice.
Honestly it was not very good value….as it was my birthday lunch :( but experience costs money.
I don’t think I will come back again.

A wonderful restaurant. Booking is recommended to guarantee to have a table. There are outdoor seatings. The restaurant is right in the centre of the old town. Parking very nearby.

We ordered from the 2-course menu. All dishes are amazing.

With the 2 courses and a drink per person, it was £30 including device.

The service is great. Staff friendly and patience.

A wonderful dining experience. A party of 12 of us had a separate small room upstairs.

We were there for a Sunday lunch and I think all of us had a traditional roast - some had beef, some had pork. I had the beef and it was very nice (as long as you don't mind the meat very rare!) (I did notice that the portions, particularly of roast potatoes, was inconsistent around the table but I did not test to see if they would have brought more on request). I started with the fishcake which was lovely but others around the table had other options which all looked delicious. My neighbour particularly enjoyed the soup.

For dessert I had the lemon tart with blackcurrant sorbet which was a beautiful combination - I particularly liked the crunchy caramelised topping on the tart.

The two young ladies who served us were both great. Polite, pleasant and efficient. Nothing was too much bother and the orders taken and delivered (without a too long wait) accurately.

Although quite a tight squeeze (I wouldn't want more than 12 in that room), it was a comfortable and well decorated room which added to the overall experience at Gilbey's. Don't go for a separate room, though, if any of your party are not good with stairs!

Well done, Gilbey's, I bet we'll be back!

Another fantastic evening dinner at Gilbeys. Can always trust Gilbeys to deliver with friends and family. The service is personal, the food is delicious and a good wine selection.
