Appalling. I called to advise of an incorrect tax code notice and since the website does not appear to accommodate this (despite the HMRC letter saying that you can!!). 30 mins to wait for someone to answer and then put on hold twice following that. At just over 45mins the call went dead.
This is the second time this has happened to me over a simple enquiry and no effort is ever made from HMRC to call back after a connection is severed. Will have to wait until the self assessment and then get the tax back (that I am again overpaying) because it appears departments dont talk to one another. (only has 1 star since I cannot post this with '0' stars.

Sending me over £1000 tax bill for something I've never heard of, due to a DWP mistake, for which I have evidence I do not owe.
HMRC tax advisor admitted i should not be made to pay tax on monies that were repaid, however refusing to accept the evidence, which is a DWP mandatory reconsideration report that states the DWP made a mistake and any monies were repaid.
Infuriating 'computer says no' scenario with total apathy from HMRC staff and outright refusal and unwillingness to help resolve the issue or to contact DWP themselves.
The DWP also outright refusing to contact HMRC directly, with me stuck in the middle of this astounding incompetence!
Only way to contact them is via telephone, which is impossible to get through. I've tried every week.
Letters state if you don't contact them they send debt collectors.
I've written to my MP and passed the matter to citizens advice bureau.
This country's governmental departments are a joke and absolute disgrace.

The HMRC 2022 turnover was £121.9 billion.

Yet they still cant afford to hire people that care.

6 years running now ive been doing my own tax returns and hung up on to the point where its an obvious trick. After a long time on hold they will pretend to pickup the phone and then just hang up.

Think at this point they are just testing people in the que to see if they can be bothered to call back, problem is most people cant so it just becomes a backlog and exacerbates the problem?!?!

An hour on hold some guy telling me it's all been taken care of, it hasn't then disconnected... Useless

Absolutely discussing service, well actually not a service at all, been on the phone for the past 2 days trying to get through, hung up 3 times now after 45 mins.

I waited over an hour then got through finally I gave my details then got put on hold for 10 mins to then get a automated message of “thanks for calling goodbye”

HMRC are an absolute disgrace, the worst "customer" service I have ever come across, truely useless!! After weeks of trying online and the telephone, on hold repeatedly for up to an hour and getting cut off every time, decided to go to HMRC offices to try to see an actual person. Only to be told that they do not do face to face since 2014!!! Only online and telephone - and when that doesn't work ......??? I'm told, just keep trying, because there IS NO WHERE to go that you can see a real person!!
BEYOND PATHETIC, EXTREME FRUSTRATION & A DISGRACE. WORSE THAN THIRD WORLD SERVICE.
