The bottom line is that if you’re going to buy a car here, take it to an independent mechanic because the owner/operator is not a particularly good one. It should be telling that the owner (Paul K) wrote himself a 5 star review on Google and Honest John’s.
It started with an agreement to buy the car sight unseen with the agreement that MOT would be sorted and the cam belt would be replaced. This was foolish on my part, and I grossly overpaid. I was told the exhaust was also replaced and sold the car with a passing MOT (no advisories). Since then the following has happened:
1. On day 1 of ownership the multi-v belt started smoking from belt dressing. I dismissed this as it seemed trivial. Luckily it mostly was.
2. On the third day of ownership the front passenger side strut broke in half from corrosion. It turns out an MOT failure from years ago was never addressed and the car was sold in that condition. It took some arguing, but I eventually got the front struts replaced (he only wanted to replace the failed one).
3. When I changed the oil for the first time I noticed the CV boot tear that caused MOT failure is still there.
4. A few months ago my car started making a noise going over bumps. On Sunday the exhaust completely separated from the (new) muffler. I took it to an exhaust shop and was told that whoever put the muffler on had no clue what they were doing, but luckily they were able to mend it.
I’m not expecting perfection from a used car; things wear out and break. But for a mechanic/car dealer to completely overlook previous MOT failures and do shoddy work, I think it deserves some pause when considering giving them your business.
