Went to visit Winchester for a day trip. Stumbled upon the Royal Oak and decided to have a few drinks since it said was the oldest bar in England. Had a lovely time there and enjoyed learning about the history of the establishment. Very cool! Visit if you are in the area. Good prices too.

We passed by chance. My wife saw the sign, so we turned into the narrow alley. I can't prove whether it really is the oldest pub. But no matter what, it's a super rustic pub, tradition and cosiness combined. Top service! Great selection of beers and drinks.

Had a lovely family reunion here on Sunday! Booked out the downstairs area and had a great lunch. Most of the party ordered roasts and all were delicious. Staff were attentive and went the extra mile by explaining the history to those who showed interest in the buildings original wall dating back to 1002. Thanks Royal Oak!

Food was good, and general atmosphere inside the pub was nice, but we had to wait more than an hour for our meal. The ladies toilets were in a very bad state (the floor in both stalls was wet, the crevices in the tiles were riddled with mould, and the doors could definitely do with a fresh coat of paint). Would go again for the convenience of having a drink in central Winchester, but probably not for a meal.

Lovely old pub with a few nooks and crannies. Garden seating is decent with heat lamps to take the chill off during a cold winters evening. Not too overpriced. Suits all crowds - visitors, locals, mates meeting up and couples having a romantic drink.
