Oldest pub in the New Forest, claims to have had beer sold on the site since 1090's, Landlords since 1400's listed. Originally a two room cottage, much extended over the centuries. Full of character. We received outstanding service when we called in for lunch. Food was very good if limited in range. Always have a guest real ales on tap. Interesting COVID related decor in the fireplace...

Lovely setting in an old fashioned cottage pub. Staff friendly and attentive.
Food… what can I say?! Wow! 10/10!
Pork belly - rich and mouth-wateringly tender
Venison - beautiful flavour and cooked to perfection.
Can honestly say this meal was perfect!

We ate here for our first night in the New Forest and what a find it was, so good we came back too for our second dinner too. Two things stand out : incredibly friendly and welcoming service coupled with really delicious superbly cooked food - the sort of pub that we all search for but seldom find. The starters, mains and desserts were all excellent - we found the pigeon breast and rack of lamb to be best, but all were of a surprisingly high standard. This is a lovely gastropub only slightly off the beaten track and comes highly recommended. The fact that it is the oldest pub in the new forest makes experiencing a meal here even more special.

We visited here while staying in the New Forest in January for an evening meal. They had just reopened that night and it was very quiet but it was mid week. The food was exceptional and my gluten free needs were easily accommodated for. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, the chef came over and spoke to us at the end of our meal and checked we were happy with the new menu - we certainly were ! Highly recommended if you’re in the area. Sorry I didn’t get a photo of the mains - I couldn’t wait to tuck in !

We took a day trip to the new forest with the mindset we specifically wanted to find an old, independent, local pub for food. And having spotted a tiny blackboard advertising a 10th century pub, we found this place! And what a cracking find. It's quite a way from the blackboard on the main road (and you'll actually find a different pub first) but keep going along the same road and you will find this one!

Beautiful interior and a very cool garden. Plenty of different seating areas and cover. We actually sat outside in the rain but remained totally dry.

We had the Sunday menu, and had starters and mains. The price here is certainly top shelf, but so is the quality of food. A couple of starters, mains and a drink each will set you back in the region of £75, but you pay a premium for being in the new forest. The food is delicious. We both put the beef roast as one of the best we have ever had.

Wow! What incredible food! I had the hoisin duck and homemade chorizo salad, another member of our party had the beef wellington and the other had the crab. All were fantastic. I was unsure of the duck and chorizo combination but it worked really well.

It's not the fastest of services, but the food definitely worth the wait. I had the crème brûlée for dessert which was delicious. I'm so used to getting a thin layer of crème under a thin crust of brûlée that the deep ramekin came as quite a surprise. It was a luxuriant silky smooth custard and the sugar was nicely burnt.

I can't recommend this place enough. The menu is small but it's clear the kitchen is focusing on getting each dish as good as they can.

The pub itself is lovely and the gardens are well maintained. All in all a fantastic place that I hope to visit again if I'm in the area.

Lovely thatched pub in the middle of the New Forest. I went with my family for a Sunday Roast on a mini break near Lymington. We sat in the pretty garden and were really pleased with the fantastic welcoming service. Our young family (4 year old and 4 month old) were very welcome and catered for. Our son had a smaller roast dinner which was thoughtfully offered by the waitress. We also had delicious starters, the scallops were exceptional. The roast was also fantastic. Highly recommended!
