About as quaint a Traditional English Pub as you can get; lovely atmosphere and absolutely exquisite food! We can highly recommend the beef pie and the sticky toffee pudding is to die for.
We enjoyed this wonderful pub for dinner after a sunny walk up the Haytor Tor with our young children. Thank you for having us!

Crikey, we needed a beer after scrambling up Haytor! Fabulous hidden pub with excellent menu. Friendly staff who made us townies feel really welcome. This place has become something of a pilgrimage in the last two years and we were looking forward to their seafood platter. Sadly this is temporarily off the menu but there were plenty of other options, all cooked to order. We’ll done guys. Mike S.

We came here for lunch on Saturday 20 August; it was brilliant.

We’ve visited “The Carps” a lot over the last 4-5 years and have always enjoyed the warm welcome there from Rich & Yvonne. Cards on the table: I know these guys personally…But lunch this time around was so good that I felt compelled to get a review in. . My partner had a vegetarian wellington and I had fish & chips: both were honestly exceptional. F&C isn’t hard to make tasty, but this was another level: mushy peas had loads of flavour, chips cooked perfectly and the fish (which Rich cuts himself) was delicious. The icing on the cake was the large chunks of salt crystals that were scattered around the dish and really set the flavours off when you crunched in to them. Genuinely perfect, wouldn’t have changed a thing.

I normally get a few bites of my partner’s food too but this time didn’t get that; it went down just as well as my lunch. Rich absolutely nailed it!

Although I’m a regular visitor to the pub I don’ eat there very often. However, my sister and her husband were visiting Sunday 4th September and we went for lunch. Food was hot, well cooked and very tasty. And as always good company. Well done to you all.

Chose the Carps for a family celebration meal and they didn't disappoint. The roasted ham hock was perfect and a few older family members commented on how good the roasties were (almost as good as Granny's, said one!) Great atmosphere and lovely hosts too as ever. Thank you Yvonne and Richard!

Amazing food and drink.....only thing that you need to be careful off is the roads to get their can be narrow at times and parking is on these narrow streets.

Great Sunday lunch in the lovely village pub in Ilsington. Nice hosts, great menu, roast beef, turkey, pork, nut roast lunches. Other choices on the menu. Dessert menu includes old favourites including spotted duck and custard. Good local beers on tap.

A lovely little pub, very friendly, cosy with great food. We stay at the IIlsingon Hotel a few times a year and always book a table at the Carpenters Arms. The food is amazing with some good vegan options, they do lovely beer and wine and last time we stayed the log burner was on and it was toasty!! There is generally some funky music playing too!! We are so pleased we found this little gem
