Historically this pub has always defined "how it's done". However, it's changed hand a few times in the last few years. I went in the daytime midweek for a private function last week and although the staff knew their job it wasn't the best.
We were in the bar, reserved for us which was kind but we were greeted by a sheet of A4 stuck to the door jamb written in biro. Never mind, at least it's reserved hey?
The tables were dirty and not cleaned from the previous night showing debris and ring marks from the glasses. There is also a shelf beneath the bar which was littered with rubbish and cast off straws. These should have been cleaned away before opening - private function or not these are basics.
The pub has had a recent refurbishment but it is lacklustre and there are patches of bare wall behind the bar which naturally draws the eye.
Being the only party in the venue you would expect there to be staff available to look after you, but the whole entourage was kept waiting as bar staff were not on hand throughout and we did have to wait a while to be served despite the bill being set up on a tab.
Music was by a local musician who was excellent. Beer was particularly good so a thumbs up there.
Overall not a bad experience but lacking in the basics and the details. I would go back and hope they get to grips with what it takes to deliver a solid customer experience. 3/5.
The highlight for me though was the sticky toffee pudding. Best I've ever had. Felt like I was going to ascend.
