Beautiful church - 1000 years old. A great walk from Farthing Downs, set in farmland. It has a very old (centuries old) fresco on the wall depicting Jacob's Ladder - demons and angels aplenty. Utterly spellbinding. Beautiful.

A fascinating place to visit.

The church in itself is beautiful, and quite old (the oldest walls are from before 1086, and the bulk of the church was built in the 12th and 13th centuries), but inside the church, on the western wall, is a treasure.

On that wall is a mural depicting the Last Judgement and Purgatory, and that has been there since the 1170s. It's been described as 'perhaps the most interesting ancient wall-painting in England'.

Well worth a visit.

The mural on the west wall of Chaldon church is one of the earliest known English wall paintings – it dates from about 1200 and is without equal in any other part of Europe. It is thought to have been painted by a travelling artist-monk.

The picture depicts the ‘Ladder of Salvation of the Human Soul’ together with ‘Purgatory and Hell’.

Wonderful hidden gem. Unique mural not to be missed A very knowledgeable volunteer gave a special insight of the mural Well worth a visit if you are visiting Farthing Downs I believe the church dates from A D 1086 As you approach the car park keep driving approximately 2 miles and then its sign posted on the right.

A unique church set in very well-loved gardens. It's clear that this place is a big part of the community, and for all. Especially liked the focus on responsible groundskeeping, with the bug house.

Not too sure that the satanic-looking murals inside fit with the wholesome image outside, but they're the main attraction here, and are absolutely fascinating.

Lovely church with lots of history. Very friendly vicar. We sat on the bench and ate our sandwiches. Dogs allowed in graveyard.
