The approach to the hide is well sheltered from the shallows of Kenfig pool so unless you really stampede into the hide shouting as you go, you won’t disturb a lot of the bird life.
As with any outdoor wooden structure in the countryside which is open to the general public, it smells a little of damp and wee and there are the usual scorch marks and gouges where some mouth breathers have tried to inflict their initials on it. But the hide has fantastic panoramic views of the pool from a nice long bench. I’m not much of a bird watcher, but there are swans, coots, herons aplenty along with the usual robins, swifts and suchlike. Oh and there’s spoonbills nearby. That’s about all the birds I know which aren’t corvids. I understand actual birdwatchers have seen far rarer birds here which I wouldn’t recognise.
Paths approaching the hide get incredibly muddy when it rains

A bird watching hide at the South end of Kenfig Pool. It is free to use all year and can be accessed by parking at Kenfig National Nature Reserve car park. It is a short walk from the car park on a sandy (sometimes muddy) path. People with mobility issues may struggle to get there. It is a pretty basic shed that provides shelter from the wind and rain when looking at the rare bird breeds that visit the lake.

Nice sweet water reservoir that you can swim in it, water is clean and is shallow for quite distance. Lots of water plants when you get deeper. There's a little sandy beach and some shadow from the trees if needed

With water levels so low this autumn, I took the opportunity to access normally inaccessible parts of the lake.
