Skipper was brilliant!.. All female team which was great to see.❤👌 Guides very Knowledgeable about the coastline.
Highlight was definitely seeing the grey seals 🦭 ❤
It was great to see the puffins, and seals so close. Very informative. Well worth doing our child loved the experience in the rib boat as well
We spotted dolphins and the crew were able to tempt them to swim along side us for quite a while, and allowed us to take it in turns to sit in the bow and watch them swimming along under the front of the boat, an absolutely amazing experience!!!
Thank you to Ffion and the other members of the team for an amazing trip. Even if we had seen no cetaceans it still would have been a fab experience, Ffion's excellent knowledge & skill really made the trip, the gannets and other sea birds were a wonderful sight, and zipping across the ocean that far out from the coast is an exhilarating experience in itself.
I researched all four boat trip providers in Pembrokeshire and I chose Falcon boats because I liked the company history and ethics in particular about a lady called Ffion (the skipper and one of the owners) who named it Falcon boats after rescuing a peregrine Falcon from the sea, some years before. Ffion is a WISE Accredited skipper, a qualified marine mammal observer and has been a member of St David's lifeboat crew for over 10 years SO ALL VERY STRONG CREDENTIALS!!
I also like that several of the team are female too, which seems uncommon in this kind of business.
The trip was everything I expected and more. Very well organised with safety as priority, comfortable enjoyable and extremely informative. The other lady working on the boat with Ffion was a lady called Georgie (I think) & both had superb knowledge of local & visiting wildlife, the sea and plants/fauna.
Even though it was a cloudy drizzly day, the weather didn't affect the experience. The boat felt safe and the journey was very smooth. As we were leaving st. Justinian's Ffion stopped the boat as she had spotted a couple of porpoises in the water - she cut the engine and we sat quietly watching a mother and her baby 🐬 a few minutes later we were off again speeding towards Skomer Island.
There were many seabirds flying past us just above the water level but as we and they were going so fast it was difficult to make out who they were.
It turned out they were puffins which fly at over 50 mph!! I knew they are excellent swimmers but wasn't aware they are so good in flight 😍. As we approached Skomer, Ffion cut the engine again n I was mesmerised by thousands of puffins - swimming, standing guard of their burrow on the cliff side and others trying to take off from the water That's a sight to behold - funny too 😍
The sound from the island was magical - thousands and thousands of seabirds talking and squawking against eerie silence. A totally sensory experience which I'll never forget. We sat watching for about half an hour before we set off again back towards Ramsey.
Throughout the trip I saw grey seals, various types of jellyfish, kittiwakes, gannets and stunning views of the coastline, cliffs and rock formations.
I asked several questions of which all were answered in detail - their knowledge was outstanding! It was great to hear about the great work that Falcon do collaborating with marine conservation and other organisations.
As we headed back it started to rain so I was glad I was wearing warm clothes and had packed my waterproof fishing poncho.
The weather changes quickly so it's important to be prepared - reading the information sent with the booking confirmation was helpful but I was unsure if there was space on the boat for my small backpack containing my binoculars, camera, power bank & poncho - plenty of room at your feet to put a small bag down - it didn't get wet and I wasn't concerned that it wasn't securely fastened in as the boat was always steady. I 100% recommend Falcon boats & I will certainly use them again x
