When you are travelling over several months a reliable vehicle is essential. It's also nice if you can turn up at your friends and relatives in a late model car that looks good. But at what cost. I looked at all the available options and the recommendations of others to finally discover Europcar could meet all my expectations and still make the price affordable. They don't cut corners, there are no rip_offs in the small print. I would strongly recommend the additional insurance cover. It costs a little more but with so much traffic these days it is too easy to find yourself with damage to your hire car. I am in Exeter again next month and I will be using a Europcar again. I must say, particularly good service at this branch (on Saturday 25th May at around 2pm). Had to add on two drivers and was in a rush yet did it accurately and quickly. One thing I really value when hiring a car is transparency and honesty about costings and risk - that was evident here. Upgrade to a lovely E-Class Mercedes for just £30 as well. Very pleased.

Excellent AT FIRST - the booking was straightforward although the app is temperamental. Went to pick the car up and the staff member was very friendly, quick and pleasant. The car was a brand new Tucson (off the truck that day and had 20 miles on the clock), went superbly and when I gave it back 2 days later the same staff member was again very pleasant. HOWEVER, having already paid an extortionate amount for age surcharge I was then charged a further £156 two days after my rental, for 4 more days' age surcharge (I only had the car for 2 days)... I emailed back re the invoice to open a case, called the next day and was told 'yes there's a case open' but given no apology or explanation as to what he defined as 'duplicate charges' and still haven't had my money back. It's not fair for them to hold funds on their own terms particularly when they are in error. Ruined an otherwise great experience and totally put me off Europcar.

Update 6 days later: I received an automated email finally acknowledging all of my communication and stating that resolving the issue is 'taking longer than usual' - but with no explanation as to why. Still yet to receive my money back at their mistake.

Matt at Exeter airport was very friendly and helpful! It was a very smooth service and we even got a free upgrade as it was our honeymoon 😀 returning the car was quick and easy and we were able to jump straight on the plane! Would definitely use Europcar again at Exeter airport, thanks Matt 😊

Couldn’t fault the Exeter branch. Great guys, no hassle, quick, convenient location of office, efficient. Did have to walk a bit for the car. I didn’t have any trouble with the car and I paid the up front fuel charge which was reasonable.
Previously, when hiring from Gatwick had a problem with the car and the company did not want to know about it, also even though we filled the car up with fuel on the way to drop off, they charged £19 just for the process of toppling it up and a very large charge for fuel.
Would definitely recommend paying the up front fuel charge and returning the car with less than half a tank full.

The friendly lady behind the counter told me both on arrival and departure that I would not be charged the surcharge if I was unable to fill up the tank during the petrol crisis. I spent almost an hour (unsuccessfully) driving around the local area to find a petrol station to refill at - ironically using more petrol! Not only have they charged £1.63 per litre for me to fill up, I was also charged £18 surcharge. Having complained to customer service, they are still not prepared to remove the surcharge. Staff need to stop telling customers that they will not be charged for this.
