I presented my 5 Series Touring with a coolant leak at the end of 2021. Cedar replaced my water pump and thermostat. The leak persisted, so they replaced my EGR cooler. So far, I was about £1,500 deep with Cedar and hopeful.
The leak persisted and got worse, so Cedar convinced me that the head gasket would need replacing. This was supposed to be a 3 day job. It took 3 weeks instead in March ‘22, with excuses about staff illness, fitting the wrong parts, the car not running once assembled. After 3 weeks, I got the car back and a £3,000 bill.
I’m £5,000 deep at this point, and praying the issues are finally fixed.
April ‘22 Bank Holiday weekend comes around and I’m driving back at night with my wife and 18m old son - coolant warning appears. I pull over, and low and behold…the coolant tank is empty. I am in the dual carriageway lay-by and fill it up with water I’m carrying and continue. 2 miles later, it’s all gone again.
I find a petrol station forecourt, and with torch and tools find that one of the coolant pipe clamps hasn’t been tightened, allowing the pipe to come loose and disconnect, emptying the coolant system. I reconnect it and have enough water to refill again and get wife and son home for bed.
I do not know what damage my engine has sustained from overheating, or if the system is yet fully operational and the car safe to drive.
I may have to go to another garage and have them review Cedar’s work.
I am looking at options around Small Claims Court and the Motor Ombudsman to seek recourse. For £5,000 I’d expect the clips to be done up, or is that too much to ask?
In summary. Lovely staff, probably great for small jobs but HOPELESS for any real fault finding, delivering on time or more complex work.
It was a little pricey but when you get that service it's worth it.
The digital report and ability to select works to be carried out via a web page was awesome, more garages should be like this.
They also investigated a small oil leak on my car. After a clean up and test drive they could not find the source but invited me to come back in a few hundred miles to investigate further free of charge.
I'll be back for sure.
Most recent service and repairs, I was kept updated throughout, provided with photographs before authorising work and final bill was lower than the estimate. Would recommend.
By about 11 I had a call from Kayleigh to confirm it was the wheel bearing and that they had done a full health check to just confirm that was the only issue causing the noise. Kayleigh confirmed the price of the work with me before they carried out the replacement work and also sent me an email containing the results of the health check. One thing I was really impressed with was the health check, rather than saying something's a bit leaky or perished' and taking a mechanics word for it these guys actually took pictures of any issues so you could see what's going on! Fast forward an hour and the work is done! They managed to get the work done quicker than expected and were able to reduce my bill slightly - that's enough to make any customer happy!! I had the option of having the car back at lunch but I had popped out so opted for 6pm drop off. Once again Kayleigh was very polite and helpful, she talked me through the work carried out and asked me if I had any questions.
All in all, first time using this garage I will be using them again! Quality work, good price and polite welcoming staff! Good job Kayleigh for impressing me especially!
