Riverview Natural Burial Ground

Before we attended a friend’s funeral at Riverview we looked at their website which was impressive. However when we actually attended the funeral it was a totally different view that greeted us. Where were all the trees and bushes shown on the website? Whilst waiting in the car park a lady proceeded to deal with the compost toilet. We then walked up a dusty path and were directed to a large field totally covered in ankle high thistles. The burial site had been prepared and a green tarpaulin covered the piles of earth. The surrounding area was barren with a few sapling trees and support stakes in the area. Three collapsible chairs were provided for the family in front of the dug area. A cassette player sat on top of the mound in full view which was switched on at the appropriate time. A wheelbarrow and two spades were in full view. The ceremony itself was bearable due to a family member and a friend’s recollections of the deceased.
The website is what they would like it to be but definitely not what it is. It appears to be just a part time occupation for people conducting two burials a week on a limited budget although the cost is by no means a budget funeral. The whole experience is one we will not forget but not for the right reasons.
I recognise there are those who are totally in favour of ‘nature/organic’ burials but suggest they view the site and make sure they are aware of the basic proceedings before deciding and NOT rely on the website which is misleading.

My mum and dad are interred at Riverview. Beautiful setting. So comforting to know they are there. The burial site was prepared so thoughtfully on the day, with pretty foliage, seating and drinks. Thank you
